Avoiding Retirement Plan Scams

Although the US retirement industry is highly regulated, with strict rules in place for IRA providers and custodians/depositories, those companies supplying assets to the IRA providers on behalf of the plan owner are not so strictly vetted.

With an ever growing basket of assets being acceptable investments for holding in a Self-Directed IRA (SDIRA) there are companies opening up to supply these assets – and some of these are less than trustworthy.

The risk of scam applies principally to some highly lucrative “alternative-asset” classes – as most other allowable investments are themselves regulated.

Newer IRA asset classes considered by many as alternative include precious metals and cryptocurrencies – both investments we’ve highlighted as being targeted by scammers.
